Super Paper Mario - Review
So I decided to get Super Paper Mario after completing Super Mario Galaxy.
Ok, so by "completing" I mean beating the final boss, as I cant be bothered with getting 100% on a game - that's just boring.
And I really enjoyed this game, it's one of the best games I've played in a while, the storyline was pretty good, gameplay was great and the graphics were great, maybe not Xbox FPS Photo Realistic level, but since I'm not a graphics fan I'd say they were as good as was needed. The best part of the game for me, has to be the humour used in the game, the self mockery and sarcasm was great. The funniest character has to be Bowser, some great comments from him such as "Hay why don't you man up a little, you never give up this easy when you attack MY castle." to Mario.
I think a lot of people were thrown off by the amount of dialogue in the game, and I admit it gets a little annoying, but if it wasn't for the great comedy within the dialogue I don't think I could of endured it. It got to the point for me where I didn't dread the dialogue, but I looked forward to it and the jokes contained in it.
Another aspect that really appealed to me was the fact it was a 2D world, as I was never a great fan of the excessive 3D used on the N64. I always missed the nice simple 2D games found on the Snes such as Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country, so maybe the nostalgia kicked in. though the addition of being able to flick to 3D was a good feature too as well as being able to change between playing as Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser - though a downside to the game would be having to change between character, 2D to 3D and changing the Pixl's to complete a level.
As I've never played a Paper Mario game before, I didn't know what to expect or how to compare it with previous titles. And so I only really have Super Mario Galaxy to compare it to, which I would say it beats hands down. Mario Galaxy was far to easy for my liking, it felt dumbed down, more of a kids game. Where as Paper Mario feels more mature, more of a adults game. Maybe Paper Mario has an advantage over Galaxy in that it's 2D or maybe I'm a sucker for humour, I don't know. But for me Paper Mario is what Mario Galaxy should of been.
If you're looking at getting this game, all I can say is a quote I read on a Wii forum.
"Buy this game if... You like Super Mario World. You want a game that fully utilises the wiimotes potential. You love self mockery (the whole Francis chapter had me laughing from start to finish). You enjoy a challenge that is a mix of action and thought."
And I personally can tick all of these boxes, which is maybe way I enjoyed it so much.
Though after playing both Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario, I'm left with one question.... WHERE THE HELL WAS YOSHI?!?!
Some wooden planet in the shape of Yoshi's head and a primitive stone sculpture of Yoshi's silhouette do not cut it for me!
